Mandatory activites for the PhD candidates

The PhD candidates must attend five seminars and five Artistic Research Forums to complete the Norwegian Artistic Research School. See course plan on the right.

Seminars

All PhD candidates in Artistic Research from the Norwegian member institutions will receive an invitation to an online one-day introduction seminar. The webinar is offered at least twice a year.

Seminar 2 (February, 1st year)

The seminar is about sharing and documentation in artistic research. Based on the research fellows’ projects, different time-limited and permanent formats for presentation and documentation are discussed, as well as how they influence work methods, artistic results, and reflections.

Seminar 3 (May 1st year)

The seminar is about ethics in artistic research and artistic practice. It provides an introduction to basic research ethics and ethics in the arts, as well as methods for mapping ethical dimensions of artistic research. Various ethical challenges and potentials are discussed based on the research fellows’ projects.

Seminar 4 (September, 1st year)

The seminar is about relationships in artistic research. Based on the research fellows’ research projects, endeavors are made to map relations and how they influence artistic processes and results in the different phases of projects. Experience is shared by leading and carrying out complex artistic projects.

Seminar 5 (January, 2nd year)

The seminar is about the final phase of the artistic research project and the identification and sharing of contributions to the field. Based on the research fellows’ projects, various forms of contributions are discussed, as well as different formats for final presentations, documentation, and the archiving of artistic results and reflection.

Artistic Research Forums

The Artistic Research Forum was established by the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme as a yearly conference to promote the understanding of artistic research from a national and international perspective. At the forum, there are normally parallel sessions with presentations both of projects funded by the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme and research fellows' projects. The forums are organized twice a year. They are open to everyone with an interest in Artistic Research, and bring together research fellows, supervisors, project managers, academic and administrative staff, and others concerned with artistic research. Participation at the forums are free of charge, but all participants must book and pay for their own travel and accommodation.
