Ph.d. candidates in Artistic Research (from the Norwegian member institutions) will receive an invitation to an online one-day introduction seminar. The webinar is offered at least twice a year. This digital resource is part of the introduction seminar. In the digital resource, you will find information about the research school; what activities you are expected to participate in; an introduction to artistic research; an overview of mandatory readings, and other resources. 


We expect the participants to make them self familiar with the online rescourses offered as part of the seminar. The participants will be given an introduction to the historical development and different models for artistic research, with particular emphasis on what is distinctive about ‘The Norwegian Model”. We discuss the difference between research on, for and through the arts, and the connection between artistic research and artistic practice. Further, we discuss which research topics and questions are dealt with in artistic research and what characterises knowledge production. Key concepts in artistic research – nationally and internationally – are also elaborated on. The participants will also be introduced for the Norwegian Artistic Research School and relevant learning resources.   

 

The introduction webinar will especially focus upon the following learning outcomes:

  • masters fundamental theory relating to artistic research 
  • can describe the diversity in theories and methods in artistic research, and reflect on and argue for choices of methods and processes in own artistic research  

 After completing the seminar, which means both attending the online webinar and studying the Research Catalogue exposition, the fellows should be in a position to reflect on and argue for choices of methods and processes in their own artistic research projects. 

 

Research fellows are expected to:

  • be familiar with the learning outcomes of the seminar.
  • be familiar with your institution's regulations for the Ph.D. program and the assessments criteria.

  • start to read/watch/listen to all mandatory material presented in the online resource.

Each year we invite a graduated research fellow to join the introduction webinar. The former fellow share her/his experiences and lessons learned in an informal conversation.

Knut Olaf Sunde


Knut Olaf Sunde, graduated research fellow from Norwegian Academy of Music, contributed to the introduction webinar in 2021/2022. He completed his Artistic Research project Site awareness in music in 2019. 

 

Duration:

A total workload of 75–90 hours (including preparation, participating in the online webinar, and self-studies); corresponding to 3 credits. It is recommended to attend the introduction weminar as early in the fellowship period as possible. The seminar must be completed before attending seminar 2.

 

How to attend the seminar:

You need to sign up for the webinar. You will receive a link to log in to Zoom sent by E-mail a few days before the event. If you are not familiar with Zoom, we recommend that you log in 5-10 minutes before the webinar starts.

 

Preparations:

  • Before the seminar, we expect the research fellows to have made themself familiar with this online resource in Research Catalogue. You should have read all of the text in the resource, but you are not expected to read anything on the reading list before the seminar. 
  • Please be prepared to introduce yourself in plenary: Name and institution/department.
  • If you are a research fellow, you should also be prepared to give a short (maximum 5 minutes) introduction to your project in smaller groups: Title of your project, field of study (e.g. music, visual arts, film), and research interest/research question.

We ask research fellows to submit the following material to pku@hkdir.no. This material will be made publicly available and shared with the fellows and contributors in the coming seminars. You will be offered the opportunity to update the material before each seminar and forum, and you can also update your bio and abstract in between by sending new versions to pku@hkdir.noPlease submit the written material in a word document. Other material can be sent in the most appropriate format:
