“F.3 & VIII – Environmental Dialogue” is one of the fifteen fragments of a larger project entitled “Vinko Globokar’s ?Corporel (1985) through Pauline Oliveros’ Meditations (1971 - 2016)” that I am conducting as part of my doctoral dissertation “Hacking - a Creative, Practice-based Approach to Performance”. The idea of bringing Globokar’s and Oliveros’ together came from the many similarities in the way they both explore the human body as an instrument, specifically as something that simultaneously presents aspects of uniqueness and universality – in other words, every human body sounds different, but the body is one of the few things we all humans have in common.
In “F.3 & VIII – Environmental Dialogue”, as suggested by Oliveros herself, I will first lead some preparatory exercises – mainly of a meditative nature – to invite the audience to join the participatory meditation/performance. Globokar’s sonic and performative gestures, both performed live and reproduced through loudspeakers, will then become opportunities for the audience to be inspired and to contribute to Oliveros’ “VIII – Environmental Dialogue”, that is, to reinforce (either mentally or by means of sound) the sounds they have just heard. The personal, unique contributions of everyone in the room will then allow a common, Globokar-based, and Oliveros-inspired soundscape to emerge.
