The subsequent work of librarians, archivists and researchers must in its turn encounter new methodological and professional challenges. The reconstruction of the past as legacy for the "new South Africa," as for new and critical geographies of the history of struggle, must eventually develop alternative directions and directives, contending with the "broken chains," covered tracks and interrupted narratives. It may be that Ruth First's life and work, after the fact, after the facts, suggest a model of their own kind for such inquiries.
