John Schuerman is an environmental artist and independent curator. His artwork reflects his deep interest in nature both human and nonhuman. His aesthetic style and social consciousness formed as he grew up on a dairy farm in southern Wisconsin. His primary art practices are Walking and Drawing, which he uses to examine his community’s physical and psychic landscapes. As a curator he’s produced over 30 exhibitions across the Midwest on topics that address current concerns in our collective psyche.>>>

Sister Forest is a concept concived in 2022 by Gordillio and Hallberg. It has formed into a Michigan Tech summer program that will take place in 2025. Forestry and Art is at focus. MT will visit with a group of students and faculty members. Örjan Svennonis local forest owner was brought in to talk about perspectives on forest managment etc.

SISTER FOREST
Björkö and upper Michigan is pretty much on the same latitude and an idea has emerged to work together from the point of departure that once our forests were connected.
The project is based on a summer program at Michigan Tech, exploring the forest around the area of Björkö.
Isle Royale has commissioned composer Libby Meyer to create a symphony inspired by the island. It will be performed by our local symphony orchestra in February, 2025. It could be exciting to think of doing a companion performance in Sweden as well.

This we would like to tell you about our forest.
Lisa and Huguo Gordillio were artists in residency at BKN in 2022. As they were out in the forest they encountered this sign. From the excitmeent by the warm gesture the idea of a project between upper Michigan and Björkö was born.
RIght of public access of land is regulated by the law "Allemnasrätten". Its based on a set of acccess rights and responsibillites. Based on the relation between the visitor in nature and the owner but also in relation or veneration to nature itself. The law is in many terms vague as its defined up on a deep understanding. It is for instance saying tthat you shoud not disturbe.
