reconstruction v/shadows of machines was written for bass player Michael Francis Duch with video by Jeremy Welsh. The work exists in two versions:

  • a concert version for double bass and soundtrack that can be performed live on stage with the video as background
  • an installation with 4-channel soundtrack and video

In reconstruction v I have worked with a schematic and mechanical form with a strict set of rules for how the elements should be put together. I developed the idea of instrumental shadows for the different machines: each machine has it’s instrumental equivalent or colour that I can apply. In this way I was able to construct a continuum from pure machine sound to pure instrumental sound via machine sound combined with instrumental shadows.

The soundtrack consists of recordings of machines and the instrumental shadows. These form the basis of a three-part form in which the instrumental shadows, together with the acoustic bass, are given more and more space in the soundscape. In many ways this idea sums up all the other works in the series and provided a method for working with sound.

Premiered January 28th 2022, Dokkhuset Trondheim with Michael F. Duch. Released on Øra Fonogram in October 2024 as part of Works for Bass II with Michael Francis Duch playing this work and my work An Atlas of Geographical Wonders/Part IV Volcanoes.
