Overview

This chapter is based on the first research question: When applying improvisation to works of 20th-century classical music, what role does the choice and preparation of musical representations play (i.e. scores, audio)?  First, we look at score-based approaches, including the use of original scores, lead sheet adaptations, indeterminate scores, and alternative types of scores. Then, we consider audio-based approaches related to aural learning and the use of audio backgrounds.
