STEMMEDEPARTEMENTET PRESENTERER SIN VIRKSOMHET

THE STEMME DEPARTMENT PRESENTS ITS ACTIVITIES

BERGEN STORSENTER & BERGEN PUBLIC LIBRARY

05.–08.03.2024 / 10:00–19:00

Program poster for the exhibition «The Stemme Department presents its activities»

From March 5 to 8, 2024, the artistic outcome of the project was showcased at Bergen Storsenter and Bergen Public Library. This presentation featured the Inner Political Landscapes workshop, the Political Confessional (object) and accompanying publication Political Confessions, the Voices publication, and the lecture Design, Participation and Democracy. All these elements were unified under the (fictional) governmental entity – the Stemme Department.

The department has three tasks:

(1) providing citizens with tools to explore their inner political voices,

(2) archiving the outcomes of these tools being used, and

(3) offering popular education.

The project Things That Might Be True explored how visual communication design can develop new methods and tools to engage the public in political introspection. By doing so, the project aimed to broaden the conversation about democracy on both personal and societal levels.

INDRE POLITISKE LANDSKAP

INNER POLITICAL LANDSCAPES

(WORKSHOP)

Poster for Inner Political Landscapes workshop

Text from poster and invitation to take part in the Inner Political Landscape workshop at Bergen Storsenter:

When listening to your inner political voice, what does it tell you? In this drop-in workshop you will turn your gaze inward to yourself, to find out what your inner political landscape looks like. Forget the Valgomat, the important single issue that is close to your common sense, or what your environment and friends have influenced you to believe. What is it inside you that makes you vote like you do? When turning to your inner self you can find chaotic things, terrifying things, or maybe comforting and everyday things. It can be a past, or a future you are looking towards. You can move between the abyss and the open plains, the known and the unknown.

POLITISK SKRIFTEMÅL

POLITICAL CONFESSIONS

(INSTALLATION & PUBLICATION)

Poster for Political confessions exhibition

Text from poster and invitation to experience the Political Confessional and the publication Political Confessions, exhibited at Bergen Public Library:

During the exhibition period, it will be possible to experience the installation and tool Political Confession, where you can create your own publication, every day from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Political confession is a tool for putting words to, and reflecting on, one’s political dilemmas. In November 2023, ten volunteers underwent a political confession with aut. psychologist Maria Pohl. In this exhibition the results are presented, together with the political confessional.

The Stemme Department and Grafill invite you to a lecture and discussion on design, participation, and democracy at Bergen Public Library! What responsibility does the designer and the profession have when it comes to democracy? And what opportunities lie there?

STEMMER

VOICES

(PUBLICATION)

During late summer and autumn 2019, an open call was sent out where the general public was invited to answer the question How do you find your (political) voice? The question was asked in connection with the relevant Municipal Council and County Council elections in September of the same year. 28 brave people answered this question through the technique of their choice, which resulted in text, photo, illustration, collage, poem, cartoon and a flowchart. Some have turned to family to find answers, others to nature. One group addresses the public debate, to NRK. With other participants, the dialogue is at the center, the dialogue with oneself or with the family. Here you will find ideologies, bike rides, the Political Quarter, Climate Roar, fear, gratitude and doubt. But in the desire to express oneself there is no uncertainty. There is strength and courage.

To bind this publication together, David Vogt, postdoctoral fellow in philosophy at the University of Bergen and writer, has written a text. A true tribute to democracy, with some of its underlying difficulties simmering in the shadows.

Thank you to all participants – fearless citizens – who were so open-hearted have shared their reflections.
