Curator Helena Selder and visual artist Anna Norberg from the Baltic Art Centre helped me with the fitting of the drawings in May 2024.

In the museum entrance hall, a roll drawing depicts the ecosystem of a fictional coral reef.

The drawings measure 441x66cm and 406x66cm.They are based on the fossil imprints found in the museum staircases.

The stone slab on the easel was donated by the Slite Stenhuggeri. It measures 40x80 cm.

The Reef Atlas

Based on the fossil imprints found in the Historical museum's three staircases, Närhinen endeavours to depict and to re-trace outlines of the coral reefs by means of ink drawings drafted on translucent vellum.

The mapped fossil imprints will be marked with code letters, printed on vinyl and placed directly on the floor cladding. The codes on the limestone slabs refer to the drawn mappings of the Atlas.

The Reef Atlas sets out to map and to imagine the fossil flora of the ancient seabed using the Gotland museum's limestone floor cladding as a starting point.

Assisted by Anna Norberg from the Baltic Art Centre we were trying out the vinyl prints in order to to find a suitable font type to mark the fossil imprints on the museum floor.
