Epilogue

As soon as the last applause has rung out, I start to coil my cables. I switch off my amps and put my Goldtop in its bag. Tord, the lighting designer rolls out the flight cases for the additional lights. They have to go on a truck tomorrow morning to another job. The sound engineer is gathering the monitors, as more flightcases enter the room. The Mechanical Forest is dissembled…at least for now. Over four years of work, compressed into one hour and ten minutes. It was an intense experience. The whole research project has been an intense experience.

So where do we go from here?

Future Research

I believe there is a lot of research potential in further studying the transcorporal relationship between a guitarist and the guitar. I will argue that this can be done by further developing an extended guitar such as the Meta Guitars. Working with this instrument makes the guitarist look at him or herself from a different angle (you even look at yourself while playing it), studying all your movements and gestures.  I see a future for this instrument, where it can be used in different musical settings. There is a lot of work to be done to further develop it both musical, visual and when it comes to practical playability.

My research has made me more aware of the tactile relationship through, and with, the skin. Tone is created by touch. The best compliment one can get as a guitarist is often that one has a “great touch”  or “great feel”. Why does some guitarists touch the strings in a certain way that make them sound in a specific way? I believe this is something worth looking into for a future researcher in our field.
