Swap Space is a pilot project at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz that focuses on novel forms of collaborative artistic research in which otherness, difference and distance between the participants are central and are brought into a cohesive form via the concept of the spatial. Selected questions and previously sketched procedures are an important part of Swap Space and will be tested for their validity and feasibility in a time-limited experiment among six artists and researchers as a proof-of-concept. Thus, on the one hand, the pilot project provides important data and preliminary results, sets the course and ensures that the future project design is viable. On the other hand, Swap Space takes up new decisive impulses for thought—such as the concept of contact—the elaboration of which aims to determine the form of a multi-year research project.

Swap Space ist ein Pilotprojekt an der Universität für Music und darstellende Graz, in welchem es um neuartige Formen der kollaborativen künstlerischen Forschung geht, bei der Andersartigkeit, Differenz und Distanz zwischen den Beteiligten im Zentrum stehen und über den Begriff des Räumlichen in eine kohäsive Form gebracht werden. Ausgewählte Fragen und vorskizzierte Verfahren sind wichtiger Bestandteil von Swap Space und sollen in einem zeitlich begrenzten Versuch von sechs Künstler*innen und Forscher*innen als proof-of-concept auf ihre Gültigkeit und Machbarkeit hin erprobt werden. Damit liefert das Pilotprojekt einerseits wichtige Daten und Vorergebnisse, stellt Weichen und stellt sicher, dass die zukünftige Projektkonstruktion tragfähig ist. Andererseits nimmt Swap Space neue entscheidende Denkimpulse auf – wie den Begriff des Kontaktes –, deren Ausarbeitung darauf abzielt, die Form eines mehrjährigen Forschungsprojektes zu bestimmen.
