This space is introducing my creative playground that I use to develop choreography. By sharing different materials it allows a peak into my inner universe of movement creation. Together with freestyling this space gives an insight into the core of my personal artistic practice and research.

Use the links beneath to go to the different materials or scroll around like in a messy toolbox. You can always return here if you get lost.

From Steve Paxton’s small dance to finding grooves

Steve Paxton’s Small Dance serves me as a source of inspiration for listening to the impulses and signals of my body. In his Small Dance Paxton is scanning the body, giving each part of the body attention and observing what is happening. Not amplyfiying anything or doing anything extra but just realising what’s happening. What’s unfolding is a small dance showing the constant negotiation of our body with gravity.

In my approach to generating and shaping movement I use a similar pathway but in relation to music and a groove. Through the connection of music and the body a groove emerges. A lot of things are happening in the body that can be observed by scanning it. Small bounces, waves and swinging movements emerge that wait to be noticed and amplyfied. A movement pattern will emerge. I aim to not perform a preconceived step as a start but to depart from the groove. On the unfolding journey I follow the information my body gives me, not trying to produce anything but following the path of emerging variations of groove.

I let the movement grow from within
Not trying to fill a preconveived form
But following the paths of my body

Paths that have been paved
Through explorations of material
That I learned in my encounters
With individuals of similar interest
And by myself

Catch the moments
However you can
You will feel it
They come and go
Make them stay
because…
Once they’re gone
They’re gone…

Underneath all
You'll find the poetic voice
At times covered by protective layers
Strongly shaped by a hidden identity

This voice with all its vulnerability
Waits to be unleashed

Find a bit of space, get ready to move, play the sound and go on a groovy exploration yourself!

Guidelines for movement exploration

Find the inner pulse
Identify - amplify - modify
Make choices out of observations of the body
Avoid to become too brainy
Let the element of the unknown guide you
Make physical or rhythmical transformations
Stay playful
Ride the wave
Allow it to flow out of you
Develop from inside
Be in control but let it happen
Let transformations grow gradually
Build something
Be taken by the movement
The music may help you

These drawing visualize some of the most fundamental movement principles that crystalized from my explorations.

These are two examples of my collection of objects. My approach to working with objects can be translated to any object or even idea/topic.

When working with the objects in a group I mostly follow the same procedure:

  1. I share something to contemplate about as an inspiration. That can be an object, a video of it, a picture of or also an idea. In this step the group shares initial observations and ideas, thinking about this something, its qualitites, how it moves, what it evoques in us.
  2. Everyone explores individually, thinking in movement, and gathers ideas.
  3. We share our observations and point out where we see potential. How did we experience our exploration and how did we personalize the initial idea? By sharing the experience and by reflecting on the exploration we create a common repertoire of ideas that we can build on.
  4. We do another round of exploration building on the ideas we gathered.
  5. We share again, reflecting on the process.
  6. We do another round where we improvise with all the information. One part of the group watches, another part dances.
  7. The observations and experiences are shared, further feeding the common ground

Step 2 to 5 as well as 6 and 7 can be repeated as often as wished and needed, depending on the level of intricacy you want and can reach.

This approach can also be done alone, using video, audio, drawing or writing as a partner to reflect with.

Try it yourself!

i m a g i n e … you would link these positions in a random order.   Which ones would you link?   What would be your transition?   Would you go the direct way?   Or seek for a way that feels easy, maybe go the hard way?   What information does the position give you?   Where is your wheight?   Where do you feel a tension, a potential?   Is there a tendency to go somewhere, to fall somewhere?   Do you like the shape of the position?   Why?   What could be next?   Do you have a prefered position you would like to go to?   Can you change levels? Could the position become a transition?...
