The Research Catalogue (RC) is a non-commercial, collaboration and publishing platform for artistic research provided by the Society for Artistic Research. The RC is free to use for artists and researchers. It serves also as a backbone for teaching purposes, student assessment, peer review workflows and research funding administration. It strives to be an open space for experimentation and exchange.

A 2-part module by the MA Transdisciplinary Studies of ZHdK, Department Kulturanalysen und Vermittlung. Held by Anna Rubi & Eirini Sourgiadaki. Autumn 2023-Spring 2024 Colour perception varies, so do the semantics of colour terminology, for both sighted and blind individuals. The questions around colour perception from ophthalmology or neurobiology perspectives to cognitive and artistic ones, are infinite: Is there a universal human experience of the blue sky, the green grass and the brown soil? How is colour perceived in the brain, how is it translated into a communicable concept and how does it affect our perceived world, our mental and physical state? What is the role of colour in synesthesia? And most importantly, does colour have to do just with vision? In this module we work with the generation of blue colour on print, using the major light source available, the Sun. The Island of Amorgos is often referred to as “Le grand bleu” after the famous french film was shot at location. Its ancient name is “Melania”. “Melani”, the Greek word for ink, (“Melano” for dark blue, cyan) as it is said that in ancient times the place was covered with dark green flora. Our investigation begins exactly with this deep tint. We pay a visit to the famous monastery and the water oracle, walk the trails to observe the sensual -not only vision-based- shades of blue. In the spring term, we participate in local activities such as beach clean-up initiatives of the remote bays by local fishermen and their boats. We visit bee-hives and herb-distilleries, we work with the most basic bits and pieces of the island to capture its essence.

Unofficial Maxlab Archive (2025) Janna Beck
Maxlab was a research group at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (01/01/2015–19/12/2025), coordinated by Janna Beck, that explored how digital tools could actively shape artistic practice. Unofficial Maxlab Archive offers an overview of its many endeavours, developed in collaboration with researchers, artists, students, and a wide range of partners, framing technology as a co-worker and infrastructure as a space for encounter. The archive brings together collective projects alongside distinct artistic research trajectories. Large-scale collaborative formats—such as projection environments, digital drawing platforms, and transnational studio practices—coexisted with research projects rooted in personal authorship and specific artistic questions. These trajectories were linked through a shared vision on digitalisation in the arts, grounded in adaptability, digital autonomy, and an active understanding of technology as material and condition. The projects collected here demonstrate how lightweight, flexible setups can enable artistic processes across locations and time zones, while leaving room for singular focus and situated inquiry. Digital autonomy is central: technology is neither spectacle nor end goal, but something to be understood, adjusted, and appropriated in order to keep artistic agency open. Rather than operating as a fixed structure, Maxlab functioned as an evolving ecosystem that designed situations for collaboration, circulation of authorship, and productive friction. Openness, simplicity, and adaptability were not merely technical choices, but ethical and artistic positions. Through this lens, the archive documents how research practices emerged in unexpected contexts—rooftops in Havana, community centres in Durban, deserts, planetariums, and festivals—wherever people, technology, and place intersected. The archive captures this way of working and the energy generated when a laboratory exists primarily as a method rather than an institution.

THE BIRDSONG TRILOGY (2025) Lise Hovik
The Birdsong Trilogy is inspired by the playing and singing life of birds. Teater Fot has created three worlds of birdlife, Sparrow, Nightingale & Woodpecker, where the children are allowed, in different ways, to take part in the theatre, dance and music. Verbal language is not in focus, rather the language of listening, movement and music. Audience participation is adjusted to the needs of the different age groups and their specific play culture. This does not always mean bodily interaction, but rather that contact and communicative musicality is attended to. The questions of social relations and interactions in art and with children have been discussed throughout the whole project. The Birdsong Trilogy was coproduced with the regional theatre Trøndelag Teater in 2012, and Sparrow have toured internationally (America, China, South Africa, Italy, Finland). Teater Fot has been one of five companies to take part in the artistic research project SceSam - Interactive dramaturgies in performing arts for children (scesam.no), from 2012-16. Strumming Bit Strings: Exploring Digital Instrumentality and Liveness in Electroacoustic Music through the Transformation of Guitar Sounds (2025) Michael Lukaszuk
This exposition explores how different technologically mediated presentations of guitar sounds work as materials to form an acousmatic electroacoustic composition. By juxtaposing processed guitar recordings with computer-generated realizations of guitar sounds, this work considers how composition can be used to engage with changing interpretations of instrumentality and liveness that stem from new music technologies. This includes the notion that such concepts can be an integral part of a sound work that uses fixed media. Here, listening to the boundaries between real and virtual guitars is more than just a technical feature. It informs stylistic choices and references different genre trajectories in electroacoustic music. The featured piece, "Obsession", is used to discuss changing approaches to dealing with the abstraction of source material, hybridization, and algorithmic procedures as aspects of acousmatic music. Additionally, the piece serves as an investigation of the guitar as a unique electroacoustic instrument. Download Accessible PDF

XR Music Performance: a phygital piano duet in the metaverse (2025) Giusy Caruso
The digital revolution is boosting innovations across our contemporary social life and culture with a strong impact in performing arts studies, creation and fruition. By exploiting augmented and virtual technologies and their cutting-edge applications, contemporary researchers, performers, composers and artists are spurred to renovate their traditional practices and creations, and overcome the boundaries of real stages towards virtual stages and extended reality (XR), where the physical encounters the digital. The possibility to be projected in the blended scenario of the extended reality (XR) and metaverse determines the avant-garde perspective of imagining music performance in hybrid stages where performers and audiences are involved in immersive and intriguing phygital experiences. This exposition wants to present and discuss what the investigation on augmented and virtual reality in artistic research in music entails, and how and why to create a XR music performance in the metaverse. The focus will be on my personal artistic research experience in the creation of a phygital piano performance "MetaPhase: A contrapuntal dialogue between a pianist and her avatar in the metaverse". SKVR & KANTELE (2025) Arja Anneli Kastinen
SKVR:n kantelerunot alueittain koottuina ja vanhakantaiseen kanteleperinteeseen linkitettyinä. The SKVR collection (1908–1948, 1997) comprises 34 editions and 89,247 texts of oral Kalevala metre lyrics collected from Karelians, Ingrians, and Finns and published by the Finnish Literature Society. This exhibition features texts from the collection relating to the mythical origins and music of the kantele. The front page provides an overview of the regional characteristics, and the tabs offer texts from each region. The exhibition is in Finnish.
