The Research Catalogue (RC) is a non-commercial, collaboration and publishing platform for artistic research provided by the Society for Artistic Research. The RC is free to use for artists and researchers. It serves also as a backbone for teaching purposes, student assessment, peer review workflows and research funding administration. It strives to be an open space for experimentation and exchange.

"No Self Can Tell" (2025) Laasonen Belgrano, E. and Price, M.D.
The research explores 'ornamenting' as a transferable method in inter-disciplinary studies, inter-faith dialogues and artistic/therapeutic practices. Adapting techniques of Renaissance musicology, the processes we have developed de-create and re-create vital connections. It is a communica-tions strategy for times of crisis. Starting with simple sonic relations we extend the method far be-yond its traditional musical setting. The practice utilises 'Nothingness' as a component of creativity, providing a novel response to figurations of nothingness as mere negation. Preliminary results sug-gest its potential as a counter force to nihilism and social dislocation. The work divides into four areas. 1. Primary research on relationships between sound, meaning, and the sense(s) of self, exploring how sense is made of Otherness via processes akin to musical praxis: consonance, dissonance, 'pure voice' and ornamentation. 2. To apply this new perspective to a range of exile experiences – mourning, social disconnection, ex-communication and aggres-sive 'Othering'. 3. To investigate the cancelling of normal time-conditions in crisis situations such as trauma, dementia, and mystical experience, relating non-linear temporality to creative practice and healing. 4. To widely disseminate our results and methods as contributions to the methodology of artistic research via journal articles, live workshops and performances, and a book of original, praxical, testable, and teach-able interventions.

WITHDRAWING THE PERFORMER WITHDRAWING THE PERFORMER is conceptualized and conducted collaboratively by Charlotta Ruth (SE/AT) and Jasmin Schaitl (AT). The starting point are two artistic practices based on methods of mindfulness and game/play; Performances for the Mind and Choreographic Clues. These two individual perspectives on participation emerge from the project leaders’ ongoing artistic research and merge in their common artistic curiosity in the facilitator role and facilitating the creation of immaterial material. Accompanied by neuroscientist and performer Imani Rameses (US/AT) the research asks: How does immaterial material perform within participatory situations? What role does participatory setting play and how does participation differ if situations are communicated as a workshop, a treatment, a practice or a performance? How can neuroscience support how immaterial and participatory art practices are developed and described? What relation exists beyond involvement and how can a participant become the situation rather than being part of a situation? What has to occur in the mind and body for this to happen? Through practice and dialogue conducted with experts in the fields of contemplative sciences, sound art, choreography, game art and somatics, the research explores how input from participants (e.g. memory, thought, emotion) can be placed at the centre of a flexible yet framed performance situation. WITHDRAWING THE PERFORMER was realised in collaboration with the Angewandte Performance Laboratory 2021-2022. In the course of the project, a lecture was given at the Center for Didactics of Art and Interdisciplinary Education, and a public series was realised at Kunsthalle, Wien & Angewandte Performance Lab. NEITHER FISH NOR FOWL / VERKEN FUGL ELLER FISK (2025) Lise Hovik
This exposition is a documentary project on the artistic research project Neither Fish nor Fowl. The research project consists of theater making, film making, workshops, performances and writing, and explores the wondrous worlds of becoming in theatre for early years. Together with my theater company Teater Fot, I have been investigating the significance of affect as philosophical, emotional, and material inspiration in the creative process, and in relation to young children in Theater for Early Years. Neither Fish nor Fowl was conducted as a performance project from April 2017 to March 2020. During this period, the research process was documented in RC, presenting methods, writings, and reflections along the way. The pre-production performance (for babies 0-2) was shown at the festival Olavsfestdagene in Trondheim, Norway, summer 2017 and at Trondheim Kunsthall autumn 2017. The full production, Begynnelser (for 3-5 years), was presented in april 2018 in co-production with the venue Teaterhuset Avant Garden in Trondheim. Baby Becomings (0-2 years), was presented at festivals and for kindergartens in Trondheim autumn 2018, and the final version Himmel & Hav / Sky & Sea was presented at Rosendal Teater in in March 2020, touring kindergartens for one week. Animalium (2019) was a spin-off production with film making, workshops, visiting exhibition spaces and other public spaces. An exposition in VIS - Nordic Journal for Artistic Research #2 on the theme Estrangement was published in 2020 through RC. In the period 2020-26 Animalium has become a new site specific research project, looking at post humanist approaches to different sites such as kindergarten spaces, libraries and art exhibition spaces, documented as an ongoing research project here. In 2026 a new version of Sky & Sea will be produced for kindergarten touring: Himmelfiskene.

Kroppslig läsning (2025) Aleksandra Czarnecki Plaude
Projektet avser att lyfta fram betydelsen av skådespelarens kroppsliga kunskap i förhållande till repetitionsarbete. Som regissör och pedagog och i samarbete med professionella skådespelare ville jag fånga och kommunicera mina arbetsmetoder. Detta med förhoppning om att generera ny kunskap i frågan om skådespelarens fördjupade gestaltningsarbete av dramatisk text med och via kroppen som instrument. Kroppen är skådespelarens instrument. Jag ser kroppen som ett kärl, en källa att hämta från och ösa ur. Ett instrument som har förmågan förbinda de analytiska tankegångarna med det undermedvetna, med instinkterna och det öppna hjärtat. Min ursprungliga forskningsfråga för detta projekt var att undersöka det glapp som uppstår mellan kroppsliga impulser i ett undersökande led i arbete/improvisation och när det ska överbryggas till en ”färdig” gestaltning av ett dramatiskt verk. Denna frågeställning tog mig vidare till att undersöka en repetitionsteknik som skulle öppna möjlighet för skådespelarna till att öppna sig för och omfamna sin kroppsliga kunskap och kreativitet. Utan att bortcensurera sina uttryck genom textanalys och det logiska tänkandet. Möta en text på kroppsliga villkor. Jag kallar det för ”kroppslig läsning”.

The Body That Never Was (2025) Giselle Hinterholz
This project was born from an old discomfort, but only found form when the body — finally — began to speak. A body that, for years, was shaped by obedience, guilt, and restraint. A body that served more to please than to exist. The Body That Never Was is not merely a visual installation. It is a passage. Each frame carries fragments of a story interrupted, silenced, violated — but once told, it becomes a material of resistance. These pieces are not illustrations of pain. They are gestures of defiance. They are symbolic bodies constructed from layers of memory, lived experiences, open wounds, and poorly healed scars. Within them, there are traces of abandonment, escape, abuse, and the absence of protection. But there is also something else: the impulse to persist. The project arises from deeply personal stories, yet it offers a mirror in which other women may recognise their own paths — without fear, without shame, without the guilt inherited from centuries of silence. Here, art does not seek to console. It seeks to expose what was hidden, to name what was smothered, and to open space for other possible forms of existence. More than a healing process, this project is a rite of insurgency against the mechanisms that perpetuate pain as destiny. Here, the wounded matter rises as discourse.

Drawing in the In-Between – ma, Intelligens and the Sketch&Draw Method (2025) Tanja K. Hess
On drawing as a practice of the in-between in the sense of the Japanese concept ma. Using the Sketch&Draw method, it is shown that drawing is neither mere representation nor pure invention, but a dialogical process between perception, memory, hand, and world. Neuroscientific models such as Predictive Coding demonstrate that each line is a proposal by the brain of how the world might be, which is then fed back and refined in the process of drawing. The hand appears not as a mere tool, but as a thinking organ, tightly coupled with perception and memory. Referring to Mihály Csíkszentmihályi’s theory of Flow, it is shown that the immediacy of hand drawing – in contrast to digital procedures – is decisive for entering a state in which perception and action seamlessly merge. Philosophical perspectives from Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Tim Ingold highlight that the line is not merely a boundary, but a resonance space in which the invisible can become manifest. Drawing thus proves to be a process of knowledge, one that unfolds slowly, comparable to a species-rich meadow: unplannable, yet not random. In the in-between of world and subject, line and gaze, a form of knowledge emerges that can be understood as Intelligens – a creative third way beyond control and helplessness.
