This exposition hosts the artistic, written, and hybrid components of Nathan Riki Thomson’s Doctor of Music degree, which took place between 2016–2021. The body of this artistic research interweaves three doctoral concerts, a CD and LP recording, a documentary film, and an article-based doctoral thesis, which is comprised of two published articles and an integrative chapter.

The integrative chapter of the written thesis is available at Sibelius Academy’s library in both printed and electronic formats, as well as a PDF that can be downloaded directly from this exposition. Moreover, the exposition houses audio-visual materials that are referenced in the thesis. The full list of references can be found in the thesis PDF.

The audio recordings, videos, photographs, performance excerpts, compositions, and improvisations are all integral parts of my research contribution that are intended to have equal weight and create a mutually illuminating dialogue with the written text. The research can only be fully understood through the interweaving of all of these elements, and it is hoped that the active exploration of this exposition may provide further insights into the processes and research findings.
