Medusa: a theatre project

1. How it started

Piia Komsi (soprano, cellist) and Sara Orava (visual artist) met a few years ago in a dance class. They both share a passion for dance:

for Piia it comes from theatre, she has been working with her body in many music and theatre productions

Sara studied classical dance before becoming a visual artist, and the two artfields have been important throughout her life

In February 2019 Piia and Sara, together with Milla Eloranta (dancer/choreographer), realised The Purple Bird of the Heart Flies Through the Night (Des Herzens Purpurvogel fliegt durch die Nacht) at Ateneum museum hall:

a synesthetic concert with music by Anton Webern (op.25, Hildegard Jone) and other Lieder from the late Viennese school.

The same evening at dinner the first idea of a common project was born. Soon after Sara mentioned that she would like to work on Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) and we decided to include material from Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613), Caravaggio's contemporary.

I found the project fascinating and very challenging. The idea was to have a team of four female artists to develop the project and curate all the aspects, without external figures such as director, producer, etc.
