Artistic output
The ensemble T-EMP started performing in 2011, some months before the formal start of this research project. It was started due to an urge to explore more fully the potential for improvised interaction that we anticipated should be inherent in some of the technology we had been working on. The first studio session was made during June 2011, and T-EMP performed at the Norwegian Music Technology days in Trondheim, October 2011 (http://www.ntnu.no/mustekdagene2011). A studio session was also done in April 2012, as a means of getting ready for the project reported here. During this first year of activity we had noted some musical issues that we wanted to see if we could chenge. One recurring problem (though one might look at it as a feature) was that the music generally evolved quite slowly so we wanted to see if we could initiate quicker collective changes. Another problem seemed to be that we did not have good solutions to high-energy sections, and finally we found a lack of solutions to finish and conclude after a long development. These problems can be views as general to any collective free improvisation, but it seemed to us that our instrumentation and use of technology made these problems even more persistent. All here said about specific problems is not to devalue our musical output at the time, we clearly saw potential in the sonic imagery created and that we wanted to combine what we had naturally happening with some more directed intentions.
We have a very large amount of material documenting our process and artistic output, both in video and audio recordings. In the following we have tried to give examples of key points in our development process, where the artistic output has qualities that lift it above mere process documentation.
