Tania Bruguera

First I decided for this assignment to work on the carreer of Tania Bruguera which i started to research. I went to the KABK library and found articles, but not books. On the internet I found clips of the TATE where she made large work and eventually I listened to some artist talks. Though this page is not elaborate because put more effort in other collectives.

On Tania Bruguera

This Cuban artist has had their passport taken away from her by authorities, started different initiatives on freedom in Havana. Freedom is not abstract.. I think this artist is very interesting to mention in this assignment even though I did not research her as in depth as some others. I do want to write something about this.

It shows immense power to stand up, especially as a daughter of a diplomat or politician. The creative and creating spirit that she, in my opinion, embodies, with performances, taking initiative of thinktanks and large scale art pieces is amazingly inspiring.

I think Collaboration should be seen as creating platforms for people acting against powerstructures. As the performance in Cuba where there was a platform to speak 'as if cuba was free'. Or the performance Burden of Guilt, one of her most famous performances, where she stood naked with a slaughtered lamb hanging from her neck and ate soil mixed with salt and water for 45 minutes. it was described as a reminder that “freedom, liberty and self-determination are not abstract ideals, but achievements that deeply inscribe their meaning on our physical being.”

Her work speaks truth to power. It started with Cuba's authoritive regime, where she got arrested an imprisoned. Questioning power and powerstructures is an important framework she operates in.
