William Gillock received accolades from the National Federation of Music Clubs on five separate occasions for his contributions to American musical heritage.

Gillock's musical compositions are nothing short of extraordinary and multifaceted, making them particularly appealing in the year 2022, marking the 105th anniversary of his birth. This year, we pay tribute to this remarkable musician and educator.

By the time he was six, he had begun formal lessons with a teacher, showcasing his compositional prowess and diverse artistic inclinations in his early works (Tarlovskaia,2022).

Today it is possible to name some key methods and approaches for jazz performance education: Virtual Classrooms and Video Conferencing; Online Collaboration and Performance; Gamification; Hybrid Models.

Collaborative musical activities such as ensemble performances, jam sessions, master classes, and workshops in the realm of piano jazz education serve as catalysts for creativity, enhancing improvisational abilities, providing real-time critique, and fostering networking opportunities with seasoned musicians.

Lynn Freeman Olson has remarked that "Gillock imbues magic into teachers from around the globe," while Martha Hilley, from the University of Texas, wrote in an article about Gillock stating that "music educators knew there was no doubt about purchasing his music; they simply purchased it, took it home, and taught it, with the interest and success of the students almost guaranteed” (Rejino R).

One of the most valuable piano pieces for piano jazz performance education is "Jazz Prelude". It is characterized by its expressiveness and dynamism, and is performed at a brisk tempo. It adheres to all the principles of the genre, with dissonant harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and distinctive textures and phrasing that capture attention from the outset and evoke a desire to listen again and again.

The abundance of chords in "Jazz Prelude" contributes to the development of technical proficiency among students, while the frequent octave leaps provide a wide range of sounds that make it suitable for both beginners and experienced pianists (Tarlovskaia, 2024)

Through this piece students can delve deeper into studying and performing jazz music as it offers a variety of jazz elements from unique rhythm to broken chord progressions. “Jazz Prelude” is believed to be both an introductory piece and a good addition to a jazz repertoire.

Another composer’s work that is valuable for jazz education is "New Orleans Jazz Styles" which is a collection of pieces for different levels. In the foreword for this work William Gillock wrote that “one of the really significant contributions of the Twentieth Century to music . . . and a strictly American development . . . is the jazz idiom.” He strongly believed that every “student's musical education should include experiences in a variety of popular stylings, including jazz, as a serious and recurring phase of his studies” (Gillock, 1960).  

Pieces from "New Orleans Jazz Styles" not only teach to play jazz but also to improvise and implement unique performer’s touch in music, filling the learning process with valuable experience. The composer also marked that performer should also be encouraged to deviate from the written notes with his own improvisations if he desires, for spontaneity is an essential ingredient of the jazz idiom (Gillock, 1960).

As part of my pedagogical experiment for my Bachelors paper I have worked with a couple of his pieces such as “Blue Moon” and “Jazz Prelude”. The main objective of this experiment was to prove that through William Gillock’s music students can broaden their pianisticle horisons and explore new musical realms such as jazz.

 For example - "Blue Moon". This is a jazz composition. Jazz is a type of musical art that involves improvisation, with its roots in African American dance music. The piece is characterized by a dotted, syncopated rhythm that requires careful attention to precise notes, accents, and dynamics. The left hand plays a light, short, dry bass line that resembles the sound of a double bass.

When working on this piece, the teacher has several goals:

- To help the student understand the musical style of jazz, including its terminology and concepts.

- To introduce the student to the specific features of this style, such as the syncopated rhythm and swing.

- Through the mismatched accents in the melody and rhythm, a "swing" or "balancing" effect is achieved.

The familiarity with the works of William Gillock broadens student’s musical horizons, enriching the repertoire with bright, colorful, and memorable pieces. The young pianist not only starts to tackle various technical challenges; his musical tastes develop. In addition, the biography of William Gillock is interesting enough to explore, which also widens the student's perspective.

The culmination of the experiment took place at Kursk Secondary School №5, where an extracurricular activity was held in honor of Gillock's life and work. This event served an educational purpose, aimed at familiarizing piano students with Gillock's work, delving into his life journey, exploring his contributions to contemporary music education, and uncovering the distinctive features of his compositions. Furthermore, the students who had engaged in jazz-based exercises demonstrated remarkable proficiency by showcasing their abilities through the performance of jazz compositions.

It is important to mark his impact on the jazz community. Gillock’s influence on the jazz world is significant. His teachings have inspired countless musicians and helped to shape the future of the genre. His techniques have been adopted by many jazz players, who use them to enhance their own performances. Gillock’s approach to teaching has had a lasting impact on the music scene, and his legacy continues to influence generations of musicians.

William Gillock’s impact on the jazz community is immeasurable. He has created numerous works to foster collective music-making among young musicians.
