Dance Remainings is a collaboration between dance and performance artists Jonny Berg (Sweden) and Sebastian Ruiz Bartilson (Chile). We are interested in the dialogues between contemporary performance, rituality and community.
Over 11 weeks, I observed a wide array of artistic expressions, each presenting a unique universe. Each week brought a different focus: some artists concentrated on producing a finished piece, while others engaged deeply with the site-specific nature of the residency, exploring the space in various ways—whether confined to the red mat, or extending into the gallery’s architecture and installations.
I noticed diverse approaches to dialogue with the space, interactions with the audience, and varying degrees of permeability in how they shared their practice. The artists linked their research to the "Practices for the Future" (P4F) project in distinct ways, embodying the concept through different lenses.
Their methodologies reflected their current interests and professional lives as freelance artists, with some continuing to explore movement research rooted in dance, while others approached movement from new perspectives. I observed varying levels of integration of personal histories, backgrounds, and worldviews in their presentations.
Common themes emerged, including rituality, embodiment, aesthetics, and global environmental concerns. Yet, each artist’s concerns about the state of the arts and the world differed, revealing a rich tapestry of perspectives and practices.
