KOMPASS / Gravningen

Gravningen
An old-growth forest near the lake Gravningen in Finnemarka, Norway, on an elevated mountain plateau high above railways and traffic. The mixed forest has a rich bird and insect life, and the moss-covered forest floor has large fields of cranberry and blueberry bushes. This forest, situated deep within Finnemarka, is maybe the only location that can strictly be called a forest; not a mono-cultural plantation of trees but an old and rich ecosystem with a diverse range of species and high density of trees. Ironically, on the audio recordings from the first day of shooting summer 2020 there is a constant presence of a timberjack and the sounds of falling trees in the distance.

Røed and Lidén made recordings at the site over several periods between spring 2020 and autumn 2021. The chosen site was a few kilometers from the nearest road. Equipment was transported with wheelbarrows through the forest. Recording sessions lasted continuously for days and nights, during changing weather. The artists were present by the rig during periods of recording.

KOMPASS, an artistic collaboration between Ellen J Røed and Signe Lidén, emerged as a separate strand in the artistic research project Image as Site at Stockholm University of the Arts. It built on an earlier phase of the research project where Ellen Røed together with cinematographer and research assistant Ashley Briggs developed a dual camera rig for internal and external studies of sites. In KOMPASS, Lidén re-developed the rig for sound recording.
Their collaboration also resulted in an exhibition at Trafo Kunsthall in Asker, Norway, 2022. Rune Søchting was a conversation partner throughout the project.
