Before Without aims to express the inherent value of the process; the dance of the many bodies that have to rhythmically or harmonically work together to achieve something alchemically pure, and to embrace how that will require acknowledgement of dissonance, chaotic destruction, opposing forces and darkness as well.
The name is akin to a koan, or a paradoxical conundrum pointing towards what exists pre-concept, before our linguistic labels and name tags hijack experience or put limits on our perception.
We strive to go on stage without pre-determined compositions, arrangements and material structures, to be pushed to compose in real-time and share with the audience the novel presence that entails.
Having the courage to enter the unknown can dissolve the perceived distance between performer and audience – we are now in this together. When everyone is on such a shared journey, regardless of what one encounters along the way, it is the collective effort itself that makes it worth it. Taking chances and exploring new possibilities together cultivates an exhilarating trust and excitement in our music.
