Inseparable - The Performance

Inseparable is a cross-disciplinary performance about the relationship between technology addiction and human communication.

It is an exciting and provocative journey of complete immersion in the digital world, through self reflection for both audience and performer, exhaustion and catharsis. The project is intended as an exploration space in which music performance and choreography meet and the artists are challenged to enter each other's art forms.

You are challenged to guess who the musicians - and who the dancers are!

A show, created by percussionist and maker Kalina Vladovska, inspired by the times and state of mind we live in, combining contemporary composition and original music by composer Pierre Jodlowski and percussionist and maker Joao Brito with the original choreography of dancers and creators Zaneta Kesik and Matija Franjes.

All this brought together under the leadership of Rene Spierings.

"Inseparable" takes a modern day technology-dependant audience on a provoking trip, where they could see their every-day-selves in a mirror. The performers are part of the audience, merely being put on the stage to make us all zoom out and get a perspective that asks us to think how we look, what we do on our (mobile) devices all day and how that affects our "real" life relationships. It is a story about realisation, transformation and reaching out to each other once again.

What makes it special are the unusual fruits and elements of the cross-disciplinary collaboration. Musicians become dancers and dancers - musicians. One of the main goals for the creation of this performance was crossing into each others' disciplines and learning as much as we can from the other. Brave ideas, such as destroying the drums in the middle of the piece and provoking the audience by joining them in their seats were born by the brainstorming of four creative minds. It is everything but usual and limited.

"The inspiration to create such a piece came from my daily experience, observatoins and emotions. I'm spending most of my day on a device - be it my phone, tablet or computer - for my studies, work, entertainment, to keep in touch with my family that lives far away... My life is in those devices. Often, I found myself stuck to them for over 7 hours a day. That realisation led me to feelings of frustration, disappointment, helplesness and even depression.

The final stage, though came when this addiction began taking over my family and changing not only our communication in moments when we were finally together but even created dangerously unhealthy habits and provoked us getting into fights. That was the moment I decided I wanted to do something about it. I knew my family was going to see this piece and the responsibility for the creation process would push me to use my time well and stay off my phone as a side effect."
