Interview
This interview was orginially held in German and on audio. This is a rough translation of what has beent talked about.
M: "It is 23 september 2023. I am sitting here with my mother. I have asked her to choose an object that is either an inheritance, second had or a hand me down. I will now ask her some questions about this chosen object."
M: "What object did you choose and why?"
ML: "I have chosen the shawl from my mom, because I enjoy wearing it. And I wear it truly often."
M: "How did you acquire it?"
ML: "My mom has a trunk in hel cellar, where clothing pieces she does not wear anymore end up. And sometimes I just look into this trunk, for a long time I do this already. Then one day this shawl was laying in there.
M: "When did you take the shawl?"
ML: "I think about six years ago"
M: "How often is this object worn?"
ML: "Uhm, I have no idea how often my mom has actually wore it. Let say for about 10 years in total, mostly in the colder seasons. I do wear it since the last five years at least to times a month."
M: "What is the fondest memory you have with this object?"
ML: "I think that is when i wore it already. I already had it when I started my dance therapy education., which is actually a little bit more then 5 years ago.
M: "How will this object be used in the future?"
ML: "The same way it has been, to keep my shoulders warm."
M: "What is the objects connection to your personal upbringing and culture?"
ML: "I do have the feeling that this is something that my mom also has used and that I am giving further life to. So in that sense the connection is quite clear, it is used by someone who has had a lot of influence on upbringing."
M: "Do you consider this object part of your material biography?"
ML: "A little bit, because it reminds me of my education. It feels then part of material biography, since I connect the shawl to this. It was always a lot of moving, stitting, moving and then sitting again. So we all had our shawls to keep us warm when we were sitting around in a circle.
I would be sad if I lost it."
