"Seeing that picture of my mom around that age, I realized how my mom and I actually are and look very similar."
Interview; Theodora Fisher
- Can you tell me about the fashion object that you have brought?
It is a dress gifted by my mom. It has an orange, red, green kind of psychedelic print. She gave it to me when I went to Venice (at the start of last school year). She saw it and thought that it would look good on me.
- How often has it been worn?
I wore it once and the day that someone took a picture of me wearing it. After seeing that photo, I really did not like how I looked so I have never worn it afterwards.
Now around a year later when I saw the picture again, I really don’t mind the picture and I feel very different.
I have a picture of my mom wearing it when she was around my age. Seeing that picture of my mom around that age, I realized how my mom and I actually are and look very similar. That was an important moment for me.
- How will the object be used in the future?
I think I will not have kids so that would mean that I would probably not pass it on to a family member. But I do really like the idea of giving it to someone close to me.
I have an emotional relationship with a lot of objects and I could never just throw this away or bring it to a second hand store. I like collecting things, objects that don't really have a function.
- What is the dress’s connection to your personal upbringing and culture?
I was brought up by parents who did a lot of things differently than others. They would eat different food, dress differently etc. I have taken over these values and I like living with a similar mindset.
