Crooked ears, struggling works

- an artistic research of the meaning of listening to the work of a queer visual artist

My plan is to explore what it means when a visual artist takes on the role of a listener, how this affects the formation of the artwork and what kind of information the artistic work produces. I will also look at how to apply the knowledge produced by artistic work to the teaching of art. My research will be based on an analysis of my artistic work and my experiences of teaching art using theories and concepts related to the field of art education. My research will combine a reflection on artistic work, art teaching practices and the relationship between them.

I examine my subject from the perspective of a queer artist and teacher. Unpacking my own citation and background is of great importance, as my research is based on my own experiences. Being in a queer body forms the citation from which I relate to the world, to my art making and to my research. As an artist, student and teacher, I carry experiences of what it has been like to live in a queer body. In my research, I describe my experiences through narrative and artistic means. I examine the artistic and social significance of the experiences I describe, drawing on theoretical and artistic knowledge.

My thesis will consist of an artistic component and a written component. The written component is connected to the artistic component and provides a general outline of my research project.  According to my current plan, the artistic part of my research consists of my two solo exhibitions and drag performances.

My aim is to offer an alternative perspective on the process of art making, art teaching and dialogue with the other in general, where there is room for listening, influencing and feeling, including queer feelings.

- taiteellinen tutkimus kuuntelemisen merkityksestä queer kuvataiteilijan työhön

Suunnitelmani on tutkia mitä merkitsee, kun kuvataiteilija asettuu kuuntelijan rooliin, miten se vaikuttaa taideteoksen muodostumiseen ja millaista tietoa taiteellinen työskentely tällöin tuottaa. Tarkastelen myös, miten soveltaa taiteellisen työn tuottamaa tietoa taiteen opettamisessa. Tutkimukseni tulee pohjautumaan taiteellisen työskentelyni analysointiin ja kokemuksiini taiteen opettamisesta taidepedagogisen tiedon alaan liittyviä teorioita ja käsitteitä hyväksikäyttäen. Tutkimuksessani yhdistyy taiteellisen työn, taiteen opetuskäytäntöjen ja niiden välisen suhteen pohdinta.

Tarkastelen aihettani queer taiteilijan ja opettajan näkökulmasta. Oman situaationi ja taustani aukikirjoittamisella on suuri merkitys, sillä tutkimukseni perustuu omiin kokemuksiini. Queer kehossa oleminen muodostaa situaation, mistä käsin olen suhteessa maailmaan, taiteen tekemiseen ja tutkimukseeni. Taiteilijana, opiskelijana ja opettajana kuljetan kokemuksia siitä, millaista on ollut elää queer-kehossa. Tutkimuksessani kuvaan kokemuksiani kertomuksellisin ja taiteellisin keinoin. Tarkastelen kuvattujen kokemusteni taidepedagogista ja yhteiskunnallista merkitystä tukeutuen teoreettiseen ja taiteelliseen tietoon.

Opinnäytetyöni tulee koostumaan taiteellisesta osuudesta ja siihen liittyvästä kokoavasta kirjallisesta osasta. Tämän hetkisen suunnitelmani mukaan tutkimukseni taiteellinen osa muodostuu kahdesta yksityisnäyttelystäni ja drag-performansseista.

Tavoitteeni on tarjota vaihtoehtoinen tulokulma taideteoksen syntymisen prosessin, taiteen opettamisen ja ylipäänsä toisen kanssa dialogin tarkasteluun, jossa on sijaa kuuntelemiselle, vaikuttumiselle ja tunteille myös queereille tunteille
