During the project period of the Algorithms that Matter research project,

Anemone Actiniaria is part of its method and its objects of practices and observation.

Anemone Actiniaria performed in various venues including the xCoAx 2016 Conference in Bergamo and the the BEAST FEaST 2017 in Birminghem (upcoming). The duo has also been invited for a residency at ZKM | Institut für Musik und Akustik (IMA) in 2015 where it contributed to a concert of the EASTN European Art-Science-Technology NetworkAnemone Actiniaria also performed at the InSonic 2018 at the ZKM and at multiple events of the Impuls Festival and Academy in Graz, Austria.

In autumn 2014, Hanns Holger Rutz and David Pirrò founded the algorithmic improvisation duo Anemone Actiniaria. They have played various concerts, and were conducting an artistic research project at ZKM Karlsruhe in 2015.

As artistic research project, the seemingly well-defined concept of algorithm is subject to a new reading, questioning human command and machine obedience. Mutual observation and overwriting is initiated between our computer systems, “Wolkenpumpe” and “rattle”, rooted in physical modelling and in the generation of parametric models based on machine learning. Through the coupling of these two heterogeneous systems, an overall new behaviour arises, and the boundaries between the formerly separated systems begin to vacillate.

Both Hanns Holger Rutz and David Pirrò see the devlopment of  their respective computer music systems “Wolkenpumpe” (aka “Sound Processes”) and “rattle” / “henri" as an integral part of their ongoing musical interaction. This is inspired by the notion of an emergent machine through ‘orientation’ and ‘composition’ as outlined by Heinz von Foerster and Dirk Baecker, whereby the functions of operators and operands begin to blur and intersect.

Their performances often include a visual layer which complements and transposes the inner behaviour of the coupled systems.
