JUXTAPOSITION OF CITY IDENTITIES Mapping Tilburg Through Psychogeographical Perspective of International Students by Meric Cukurova

The city is not simply a physical space but also a cultural and social space that is continually being constructed and reconstructed by its inhabitants. Unlike a fixed city image, mapping practice represents a temporary city that is open to change from an individual’ perspective. In that sense, I try to explore new ways of seeing the city through the social imaginaries of people from different cultures by co-creating with international student. As a tactical field, public space is an imaginary space that resists one dominant image of the city where participants produce meaning continually through observing and following their emotions in the urban environment. Aiming to understand how international students create meaning and how the city of Tilburg is constructed through multiple ways of mapping in three areas -Dwaalgebied, Winkelgebied, and Veemarktkwartier-, I focus on the performative aspects of mapping and challenge traditional mapping practices through psychogeographical and experimental video mapping.

She was frustrated when she started her walk. She saw ING with orange color.

Her mood turned green when she went to the place she loves. Green means peace to her. Her road is curved. She saw people, there were families and many people. She was surprised. Her mood turned to yellow. People were giving her energy. When she saw families and kids, she was relieved. Before, she didn't see any children. Because, where was the future? She started to see ugly buildings, very repetitive. She didn't like it. The city is one color with dark orange, and old buildings are repetitive. It is boring. But her eyes are relaxed in the city of Tilburg. Modern buildings in Tilburg are diverse to her. The mural was unexpected. She didn't see them before here like in another city Kilkis you can find them. There were cafes and restaurants, different from Starbucks and, the family restaurant. They were very kind. She walked very slowly. Cars passing by the opposite. Are people looking at her? Was she crazy? Who knows? Ups and downs, like a roller-coaster but calm. The black feeling didn't change. She wanted to end in a peaceful location. She wanted to see people again and went to there.
