In this piece,I am making 12 short fragments that should be played together with projections of paintings by the Canadian artist Marc Bell. It is part of a larger project I have, deriving music from pictures, like translations. Other inspirations are the music of Harry Partch, and early electronic music. The first version of the piece was performed at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) in January 2007. This was a sketch for quartertone marimba. The second version will be adapted for guitar, sound objects and electronics, since the performance will take place in London, and it would be too expensive to transport the marimba. The small fragments or phrases are supposed to be taught "by ear"to a group of invited musicians. This way of learning music is a technique that I am interested in exploring as a method for creating constant microvariations of existing material. I am especially interested in focusing on detailed and ornamented versions of a simple tonal material. That makes the Quarter tone marimba a perfect instrument to work with. The lastversion will be a further development, for augmented Quarter-tone marimba solo.
