The Ministry of Culture is responsible for matters relating to culture, equality and discrimination, the media (films, broadcasting, press and copyright), sport, gaming and lotteries and the voluntary sector.

To be the Minister’s secretariat:
The Ministry shall assist the political leadership in designing policies and overriding objectives and plans for the carrying out of policies on their areas of responsibility, sustain communications with the Storting/Parliament and the Government and present important singular issues for the political leadership.
Være sekretariat for statsråden:
Departementet skal bistå politisk ledelse med å utforme politikk og overordnede planer for gjennomføring av politikken på eget arbeidsområde, understøtte kommunikasjonen med Storting og Regjering og framlegge viktige enkeltsaker for politisk ledelse.

The Ministry of Culture is responsible for the policy areas of culture, equality and discrimination, copyright, the media, sport and the voluntary sector. The Ministry also has overarching responsibility for the state lotteries run by Norsk Tipping and for regulating gaming and lotteries run by private organisations.
Kulturdepartementet (KUD) har ansvar for den statlige politikken og forvaltningen på områdene kultur, likestilling og diskriminering, opphavsrett, medier, idrett, frivillig virksomhet og pengespill og lotteri.

The Ministry shall carry out administrative tasks attributed to the Ministry and act as administrative and judicial appeal body for cases that have been handled by subordinate agencies.

Departementet skal utføre forvaltningsoppgaver som er tillagt departementet og være klage- og overprøvingsinstans for saker som er behandlet i ytre etater.

Govern and monitor subordinate agencies:
The Ministry shall set goals, provide framework, supervise and follow up results in subordinate agencies in accordance with current laws and rules and political guidelines.
Styre og følge opp underliggende virksomheter:
Departementet skal sette mål, gi rammer, veilede og følge opp resultater i de underliggende etatene i samsvar med gjeldende lover og regler og politiske retningslinjer.
