Ready-mades
A gobo, whose term derives from English goes before optics, is a metal plate placed in front of a projector, on which is cut a pattern, most often with laser ablation techniques. It is used to give a shape to a light that is cast over a space or an object, for example, to produce a pattern of clouds on a theatre stage.
Seven used gobos, of two different sizes, and found in the light department of the Theatre Academy of Helsinki where the research takes place, are exhibited as such, as readymades. Their patterns correspond to clouds, leaves, grass and sea waters. The discolored oxidation of the stainless steel and the slight distortion of the metal are caused by the high temperature of the lamp of the stage projector.
