MUSIC FOR THE INNER EAR
-an explosion of sonic potentiality
After critical mass was reached, I sought to move away from creating imaginary sound via written text. I wanted to bypass the linguistic and semantic understanding (required to access the imaginary sound pieces described in words, to reach a more intuitive and immanent evocation of inner sound experiences.
Potential for 9 snare drums (picture to the left) was a study leading to the creation of Potential for 65 triangles and Potential for 1000 recorders, and originated from my wish to create experiences of imaginary sound - without the use of text.
Since 2013, I had been working with multiplication of sound as a way to make the sound of a given musical instrument transcend itself, and become another sound, freed from some of the cultural load previously attached to the instrument.
The work with multiplication of sound resulted in the SOUND X SOUND series (2013-2016), in which I wrote music for 8 recorders, 9 pianos, 18 clarinets, 16 triangles etc.
In the making of Potential for 9 snare drums, I sought to merge the multiplication of physical sound and potentiality of imaginary sound – and thereby push the two domains into a zone of convergence.
