The Hague – On Monday July 2 at 18:00, the first ARC (art_research_convergence) forum takes place at the Anna van Buerenplein in The Hague. ARC is a new platform for the artistic-academic discourse in the Netherlands and is an initiative of the Leiden University Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA).

ARC's first session is about POWER. Power is the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events. Since acting and causing others to act is precisely what puts society in motion, then social life must be about power too, that is, about acting in relation to one another. But is there anyone behind the wheel? Who are the players in the network of power that keeps the world turning? Different versions of these questions are explored by the artists-researchers featuring in this ARC session, the first one of the season 2018. Admission is free.

Presentations by:
Ingrid Verweijen - Audition Audition (performance). The work discusses the format of auditioning and the power relations of all parties that are present during an audition.
Lucy Cordes Engelman - Heresy of the free spirit (performative lecture). In what ways are fiction and story through the medium film/video able to operate and resist the traditional values and subjectivities that continue to hold us captive as both audience and participant?
Bjarni Gunnarsson - Command and Autonomy (algorithmic composition). A short discussion of concerns regarding generative processes and algorithmic composition focusing especially on the polarity of 'command' and 'autonomy', followed by a musical performance reflecting on these issues.
GVN908 - MAREA (video). A film composited algorithmically with live security camera footage, the purpose of which is to empower the events and actors that have been historically made bureaucratic, mundane and insignificant.
