Carrie Noland's essay Inheriting the Avant-Garde: Merce Cunningham, Marcel Duchamp, and the "Legacy Plan" came to my attention towards the end of my MA program. She writes thoroughly and pointedly what exactly Cunningham's contribution to the world was, and how to continue in the spirit of Cunningham, rather than through merely restaging his choreography.
