PhD in Practice by JJ

The PhD-in-Practice is a doctoral program for research in artistic practice, set up by the Institute of Fine Arts and the Institute of Art Theory and Cultural Studies. The program provides participants with the opportunity to pursue their individual research projects in a collective environment with a strongly trans-disciplinary and international focus. It provides a concept of arts-based research built upon critical epistemologies, as developed in the context of feminist, queer, postcolonial, ecological, post-Marxist and other political and emancipatory projects.

ANETTE BALDAUF

Anette Baldauf is professor for methodology and epistemology and co-director of the artistic research program PhD in Practice at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. At the New School University in New York she was trained as a sociologist with an emphasis on urban and cultural studies. Since then her interest has shifted to the many and often erased traces of colonialism in Europe. Her research revolves around questions on artistic research methodologies and ethics, particularly in transcultural research settings. Completed research projects include the WWTF project Spaces of Commoning. Artistic Practices, the Making of Urban Commons and Visions of Change (with Stefan Gruber, Moira Hille, Annette Krauss, Vladimir Miller, Mara Verlič, Hong-Kai Wang, Julia Wieger 2014-2016), the PEEK project DisPossession. Post-Participatory Aesthetics and the Pedagogy of Land (with Berhanu Ashagrie, Sílvia das Fadas, Ipek Hamzaoğlu, Janine Jembere, Naomi Rincón Gallardo, and Rojda Tugrul 2018-2021) and co-directed with Renate Lorenz the Doc.Funds (FWF 2018-2023). The PEEK project Fabricating Adjacency. Textiles, Trade and Terror (with Milou Gabriel, Moira Hille, Sasha Huber, Janine Jembere, Susanne Nuwordu, Esther Ojo, Jumoke Sanwo and Mariama Sow) will be completed in 2025 (FWF 2023-2025).
