SUPPORTING MATERIALS APPENDIX

SITE NAVIGATION

Use the links [See MENU on the left] to navigate. These sections can be explored experientially in a non-linear, intuitive way, where written texts and visual and sonic materials can be dipped into or lingered over. We invite you to dive in and explore your own pathway through.

* ECOLOGIES IN ACTION: The Ecologies in Action have been evolved over a period of 2 years. Here we present over 20 recordings of Ecologies in Action activated live on Zoom alongside their accompanying ‘notes’. These Ecologies in Action can be independently 'dipped into' to engage with our enquiry, or can be encountered in their entirety where the invitation is for you, as reader, to explore an aesthetic mode of observation / watching / listening.

* SINGLE PRACTICES: Within this project we have developed and tested various practices as potential aesthetic research practices. Here we share the 'scores' for each of the practices that we have activated within our Ecologies in Action.

* ARTEFACTS: Some of the practices performed within this project generate Artefacts, that is, objects that can be distinguished and therefore isolated from the actions that have produced them. Here we share a selection of visual and textual Artefacts generated through our Ecologies in Action.

* RESEARCH JOURNEY: This narrative is intended to be read in conjunction with the Ecologies in Action section of the exposition, helping to illuminate the focus of our evolving enquiry within and through the Ecologies during each critical development phase of our project.

INTRODUCTION

This exposition shares the research process of the collaborative project, thinking aesthetic thinking through aesthetic research practices, tracing its key phases between June 2020 - October 2022 and the gradual evolution of an original research dispositive or apparatus which we call Ecologies in Action. This exposition is conceived as the Supporting Materials Appendix for a parallel article published in ______________ where the wider Initiating Hypotheses and Emergent Questions; Conceptual Framework and Contingent Insights Incites of the project thinking aesthetic thinking through aesthetic research practices can be encountered.

thinking aesthetic thinking through aesthetic research practices is an artistic research project by Alex Arteaga, Emma Cocker, Nicole Wendel (with Sabine Zahn during the first phase), focused on the ways in which aesthetic research practices realise a specific form of thinking: aesthetic thinking. Since 2021, we have been working together intensively within a series of exploratory online sessions, investigating the concept, performance and conditions of and for thinking aesthetically through specific aesthetic research practices in different media (drawing, video, sound, language, body movement, material encounters, spatial configurations). Whilst geographically distanced (working in Barcelona, Berlin and Sheffield), we have found new ways for sharing practices within an online environment, for exploring the media specificities of online technologies as a site of aesthetic enquiry. In this exposition, we narrate the research process of this project, sharing various research documents (recordings of Ecologies in Action) and research artefacts generated therein, alongside presenting a series of 'scores' for the aesthetic research practices evolved within this project.
