A workshop exploring intense listening, experiences facilitated by the musicians and designers

Research Model

During the project we moved form reflecting by looking back at what we had acheived and proflecting (a new languaging term) by projecting our imaginations into future possibilities.

Conceptual framework for the project was derived from proxemics (for the audience – close listening) and relational aesthetics of shared soical values in the performance.

Proxemics

Based on the theories of Edward T Hall, this workshop defined the spatial relationship of the musician, and his body to the instrument set up and to the performance space. This lead to an understanding for cretaing more intimate and vulnerable perfomance situations.

Research Model

The project developed its own research model, in order to describe and identify how we moved between the different levels through out the project.

Sensory Experiences

The team and the audience were invited to a series of sensory experiences in a ritual form in order to allow them to focus on the subtlties of being present in the moment.

Gift Exchange with Audience

In this workshop the nominated audience of amatuer musicians were invited into a discussion about the crafting or selecting of sounds, and instruments. They also brought their own "gifts" of objects that had interesting sound qualities. The ritual of waiting to enter, entering, sitting and experiencing the performance was also broken down in order for the audience to reflect on the this process.

This was a film made that explored the graphic juxtapoistion of the score of the King of Denmark to the instrument set up and challenegd a musician to create a different iteration of the performance.

This series of workshops and experiments, explored the relationship of the intimate act of eating, to the need for intimacy and culminated in a Happening called Take A Seat where theoris of audience as; Spectale, Guest, Witness and Gift Giving were intergrated into a meal with an invited audience of musicians and designers.

Discourses employed in this project (this is a selection of the readings undertaken)  were wide ranging and enabled the musicians and designers to develop a shared perspective in order to; develop the artistic elements of the project as well as reflecting on the nature of artistic reseach projects, and methodlogies of research employed.
