Performing Precarity

To be a contemporary music performer today is to have a deeply fragmented practice. The performer’s role is no longer simply a matter of mastering her instrument and executing a score. Music practices are increasingly incorporating new instruments and technologies, methods of creating works, audience interaction and situations of interdependence between performer subjects. The performer finds herself unable to keep a sense of mastery over the performance. In other words, performing is increasingly precarious.

Flugbahn (2021 / 2023)

This piece was composed in close collaboration with Ellen Ugelvik and Jennifer Torrence within the framework of the investigation project „Performing Precarity“ conducted at the Norwegian Academy of Music.

In this piece there are several contrapositions that are slowly unfolding throughout. The relationbetween sound and visual objects (on video or on stage) are explored in different ways. Sounds and objects are constantly colliding, set against each other with continuous attacks that detonate transformations into different materials. Constant and stable attacks are confronted with sound producers that are fragile, difficult to control, unstable, or that can only be set into motion.

These layers of clashes and transformations are a personal way of exploring the idea of dealing with that which lies beyond our control and which exceed our contemplation.
