Verdiales used to be played spontaneously at the end of the day, at weekends with family and friends or at celebrations such as weddings. Therefore, it was not usual to wear a traditional costume as it was something that was done in the moment, without a previous plan.
However, on special occasions such as festivals, fairs or, later, competitions, pandas will wear their traditional costume which is very simple: a pair of black trousers (for men) or a black skirt (for women), a white shirt or blouse and a red sash. Sometimes men also wear a black vest.
Depending on the group, they may change the colour of the shirt or even the colour of the sash, in order to distinguish themselves better and be different. For example, it is possible to see a panda with a black bottom, a light blue top and a darker blue sash. Or perhaps red shirts for men instead of white. There are several combinations, but the basic and most common is the first option.

Costumes and festivities

One of the most relevant periods for verdiales tradition is the Christmas season. Several decades ago, probably more than a century ago, countryside people used to gather to play verdiales and go from posada to posada from the 25th to the 29th of December. It was a time of feasting, celebration and enjoyment. Besides, they made some money playing in those bars. Then, the summer, especially from the solstice onwards, was an important period as well since all the fairs and festivals were held between June and August and any excuse is a good one to go out and play verdiales with neighbours, family and friends.
Nowadays, the most important verdiales festival of the year takes place on December 28th and all the fairs and festivals are still held in the summer, the most prolific time for verdiales activities.
These dates, as it will be discussed in the chapter about history, are all related to very ancient rites and traditions, most of them of pagan origin.

The costume would not be complete without the spectacular verdiales hat. On the left, it is possible to see the hat, made of flowers, small mirrors and long, colourful ribbons. This type of cap already appears in Phrygian traditions, as well as ancient Greece and Rome1.

There is also another hat that is only used in one of the three styles of this music, the Montes style, and is called 'chapelín'. It looks very much like a military cap with a lot of embroidery and ornaments. As it is hardly used, it is really difficult to find pictures or videos of the chapelín. I personally found out about this hat by chance in an interview and the only picture I have been able to get is taken from the video recording (image 7).
