    Functional layer
  • What is it made to do?
  • What else can it do, what we do not expect?
  • Which potential does it have in different contexts?
  • Does it raise certain questions? Does it trigger curiosity or certain actions (eg to touch, to open etc.)?


  Phenomenological layer

  • Which material is it made of?
  • How does it feel like? Smell?
  • What are its visual, sonic and haptic qualities?



    Metaphorical layer
  • What does it look like?
  • What does it behave like?
  • Archetypical reference (symbolism).



    Contextual layer
  • Which cultural references does the object have?
  • Psychological reference and personal relationship to the object.
  • Geographical and scientific context.
  • Prejudices about the object.


  History of the object

  • What is its age, its reparability?
  • What is previous ownership?
  • Memory of the material (scars). Does it have traces of time?
  • Where does it come from?
  • Where does it go to die?*
