Lydlab #02 - Redundant Location with Magnus Bugge, in the The Old Mack Welding Workshop, Tromsø Academy of Arts
Redundant Location was a sonic investigation of time and place, in the old Mack Brewery in Tromsø. The space is an abandoned welding workshop and steam room. This place was full of activity and noise. Now it’s left silent and empty.
I invited sound artist Magnus Bugge to reflect, experiment and explore the space during a week in March 2020. Bugge is known for his numerous performances and installations, he’s also a part of the experimental theatre group Verdensteateret.
Initially we planned to be in the space located nextdoor, but when we came into the steam room, we decided we just had to do something there. The space is almost like a cathedral with classic squared windows and a six metre high ceilings. Entering the space feels a bit like entering medieval times. The reverb is almost ten seconds, all percussive sounds become long.
What was left there? What can we add (without being theatrical)? What will remain? We came to one place, created a new space and left it as another place (than when we came).
We used found objects from the site, transducer speakers, site specific sounds (recorded with a geophone) and a huge coil entangled around an old chair (spolestolen), picking up EMF signals.
The last day we opened up the space to the public.
