Chronos and Kairos cafe
AFTER-PARTY as a topic to talk about kairos
The afterparty is a vacuum between party and the reality. We’re all constantly rushed by Chronos, the constant ticking of the clock. At an afterparty we long for that moment of Kairos. This moment is already in the past. Everyone seems to have a different reason not to go back to reality. And make a last effort to slowdown time, and stretch the Kairos moment before the sun rises again.
Collection of performances with light, sound and texts
In order to get a better and broader understanding of chronos and kairos I organised a chronos and Kairos Cafe. Here were people invited to have a beer and a chat about. When do you forget about time ?
From these conversations we picked a core to translate into a small performance.
Driven by chonos
Chronos stands for continuity, an old man with a long beard and an hourglass in his hand, after all, this is about time being measured. The time with which we organize the world. An hour can crawl by or rush by, accelerate or slow down, as required. But on the clock every hour will be the same as the other hour.
How can we translate chronos into sound, movement and space ? We attempt to break free from the constant ticking. But in the end we can’t outrun the clock.
And time wears out the days
With the ticking of the clock,
Which slowly grind the hours
Very quietly, without shock
Reflection
Experimenting with sound. Really like the constant rhythm of the steps. But in order to make this work in the rhythm needs to be constant. One misstep is immediately noticed and the performance loses it’s power.
Peter pan Syndrome
Creatures of the night
Performance: movement, lights and the fear of becoming old.
Fear of becoming old. One of the things we spoke about was the fear of becoming Old. A fear of a decent life in a suburb. With a half moderately paying job, with conversations about the weather during your coffee break.
We experimented with creating the inside of a head. The part where you’re haunted by these thoughts of becoming old and dull.
A live visual collage of a Kairos moment at a party. Recreation of a memorie. Stamping feet, flashing colours, moving bodies, breathing, sweating, dancing and not thinking about tomorrow. A ritual to strecht and forget about time.
Performance: using 4 different colours of LED light to create different shadows, experimenting with creating different images through movement, creating a sequance of moving bodies.
