6094 FOLDS

Het Huis Utrecht Spring/Summer 2020

A 40sqr meter room filled with 6094 pieces of folded paper. Old notebooks, letters, mail, sketches. Some from the artist most from the sympathetic spectator. 6094 folds is project that started with a methodical approach to natural light and aesthetics, but due to an empathetic response transformed into something deeper. It became a metaphor for changing perspectives, getting out of comfort zones, putting in the effort, humans helping humans, and spreading ideas through aesthetics and curiosity. It has become a tool to connect and communicate with other people about difficult topics, and the dark side of human experience in an environment that is creative and beautiful. The Project deals with the reality of how making art can produce and cultivate thought. That sometimes the act of doing or making can lead the thinker to refresh, question, confront, and connect.

6094 folds ended with the room coverd in balanced, folded paper. With the curtain pinned into a frozen breeze and the only way to view the instillation from the doorway. The spectator carefully peaks inside holding their breath, worried that the tiniest movement will set the carefully balanced papers into a domino effect. A mirror is placed in the middle so if the spectator is willing to they can bend out of their physical comfort in order to see something different and beautiful - a pool of red paper invisible from the doorway.

6094 folds ended by opening the window. The wind toppled the papers, the artist picked them up. After filling the room for a month it was empty in an hour. The work had stopped, until next time. A more detailed look into the process is availble on the research page of this site.
