Friday 30th of May: Cuntemporary Presents: Mercurial Bodies fb

In support of the first Pride Festival in Cyprus, Cuntemporary presents Mercurial Bodies: a two part event that addresses the performative body’s capacity to challenge normative representations of sexualities and genders. As the title suggests, bodies have a mercurial quality. That is, they have the capacity to transform and metamorphose their appearance into multiple representations of sex, gender and sexuality. Such transformations challenge the perception that gender and sexuality are static while opening up a discourse on what representations are permitted in our social fabric.

For our first event on Thursday 22nd of May, Cuntemporary will screen the documentary This Is Not A Dream (dir. by Gavin Butt & Ben Walters) that investigates the relationship between performance art, activism, politics, sexuality and gender. The screening will be followed by a long table discussion with the participation of academics, activists and cultural workers. The Long Table format is a performance installation developed by artist Lois Weaver that experiments with democracy and public engagement by combining a relaxed dinner table atmosphere with a conventional public forum and encouraging informal conversation on crucial topics.

For our second event on Friday 30th of May, the venue will be transformed for one night to host a dynamic evening presented by internationally acclaimed actor and performance artist Marios Ioannou. Sophie Crow will embellish the walls with visceral illustrations of self-pleasuring. Site-specific interventions inspired by ‘The Woman Who Loved To Make Vaginas Happy’ from the theatrical play ‘Vagina Monologues’ by Eve Ensler will be performed by Despina Michaelidou & Kalia Maliali. Prepare for the extraordinary screening of Community Action Centre filled with the diversity of queer-feminist sexualities and we will end the night with performances & a DJ set by the tour de force known as A Man To Pet.
